Integrating AI Tools for Chinese Instruction at the Advanced Level
As a Chinese language instructor with over a decade of experience teaching at the advanced level, I am excited to explore the benefits of integrating AI learning tools into my language classes. Advanced language learners often come from diverse language backgrounds, have different language goals, and require individualized support from their teachers. AI-powered tools, such as ChatGPT and GPT4, show great potential for assisting both teachers and learners in creating customized lesson plans to meet each student's needs.
In this presentation, I will use a sample lesson to demonstrate how AI-powered tools are used to generate personalized Chinese texts and materials based on each of my students' interests and language level, to identify and address their weaknesses in each of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and to improve their overall Chinese language proficiency.
As a Chinese senior lecturer in Columbia University's East Asian Languages and Cultures department, I have extensive experience teaching History of the Chinese Language and various proficiency levels of Chinese. My research interests encompass Chinese language history, historical linguistics, and pedagogy of Chinese as a second language. I am the author of several elementary and advanced Chinese textbooks and currently serve as the Director of the Chinese Program.
