Exploring AI Tools in Scenario-Based e-Assessment (SBeA)
Exploring the evolving landscape of language assessment, this workshop offers participants an exploratory foray into the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. We will introduce attendees to rudimentary applications of chatbots and adaptive technology, envisioning how they might be employed to simulate real-world communication scenarios: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. Our workshop primarily seeks to introduce AI tools' potential in the domain of language skills and competencies assessment; share our preliminary experiences with adapting these AI systems to diverse performative contexts and discuss initial observations on AI's assessments vis-à-vis human evaluators.
Throughout the workshop, participants will get a glimpse of how AI tools might provide feedback and recommendations, identifying patterns and aiding in the learning process. However, it is essential to understand that this is a journey still in its infancy. Our objective is to spark a conversation on the nuances of AI in language assessments, the challenges, the potentials, and the many roads yet to be taken. Join us as we chart the unknown terrains of AI-driven language evaluations.
Adriana Merino is a Senior lecturer in Spanish at Princeton University with a Ph.D. in Second Languages and Linguistics. Specializing in Pragmatics, she currently teaches Spanish, and Pragmatics. Her research focuses on intercultural pragmatics and ICT in language education. She's published on pedagogy, discourse analysis, and pragmatics.
